YURI'S ACCIDENT
Yuri's Accident is an indie band, formed in Athens, Greece, in 2010, during a winter night when pints were flowing and David Bowie was singing “Starman” on the repeat. Inevitable subsequent associations with the tragic irony surrounding the life and death of the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin led to their naming. The band consists of five members: lead vocalist and guitarist Thanos Tsoumpris, flutist Stathis Doganis, keyboardist and backing vocalist Maria Pantsiou, drummer Irene Vikentiou, and bassist George Bakoulis. Members bonded over a shared love of 80s post punk, flavoured with an essence of the 90s grunge and garage sound. In July 2013, Tsoumpris and Vikentiou moved to London were they shared a room and a dream of a new life path. With the help of valuable friends, the band self-produced their debut Single while simultaneously working full-time jobs, Tsoumpris as a trainee psychiatrist and Vikentiou as a game writer. Their sound is based on a firm rhythm section colored with disciplined but abstract guitar patterns and dreamy organ sounds. Their songs talk about common and not so common day to day stories, on the canvas of the contemporary Greek turmoil. Listen to them loud.
